Considering LASIK or another form of laser vision correction? It starts with knowing whether you are a good candidate. Mountain View Eye Care provides thorough LASIK consultations to help you make an informed decision and we coordinate your care with trusted surgeons from start to finish.

LASIK Consultation

Overview

A LASIK consultation at Mountain View Eye Care includes a comprehensive evaluation of your eye health, prescription stability, corneal thickness and tear quality to determine whether laser vision correction is a safe and appropriate option for you. Dr. Hicks explains your candidacy, sets realistic expectations, and coordinates pre- and post-operative care with experienced surgeons.

What to expect during your visit

Your appointment begins with a conversation. We review your health history, any medications you take, and what brought you in, whether that is a routine checkup or a specific concern. From there, Dr. Hicks performs a series of tests tailored to your age, health, and symptoms.

We check how sharply you see at various distances, how your eyes work together, and how well they respond to light and changes in focus. We also examine the front and back of your eyes using instruments that give a magnified view of the cornea, lens, retina, and optic nerve.

If dilation is needed, we explain what to expect and how long the effects will last before we begin. Nothing in your exam should come as a surprise.

Conditions we commonly address

LASIK consultations include a thorough evaluation to determine whether laser vision correction is appropriate and safe for your eyes. During your consultation, Dr. Hicks provides:

  • Review of medical and ocular history
  • Discussion of vision goals and expectations
  • Comprehensive vision testing
  • Detailed refraction
  • Pupil size evaluation
  • Tear film assessment
  • Evaluation of corneal thickness
  • Screening for eye health conditions
  • Determination of candidacy for LASIK or alternative procedures
  • Explanation of risks and benefits
  • Referral to a surgical center, if appropriate
  • Post-procedure care planning

Whether you are a strong candidate for LASIK or better suited for another procedure, recommendations are based on careful evaluation, realistic expectations, and long-term eye health.

What Happens During a LASIK Consultation

A LASIK consultation is more involved than a standard eye exam. Dr. Hicks performs a thorough evaluation that includes your current prescription and whether it has remained stable over time, measurements of your corneal thickness and curvature, an assessment of your tear quality and quantity, a detailed look at the health of your retina and optic nerve, and a conversation about your daily life, work, hobbies, and expectations.

Who Is a Good Candidate

LASIK works best for patients who meet certain criteria. In general, good candidates have:

  • A stable prescription for at least two years
  • Healthy corneas with adequate thickness
  • Absence of dry eye disease
  • Realistic expectations about the results
  • No adverse health conditions that could affect healing
